This program introduces travelers to the “must-see” highlights of Laos, including the modern capital of Vientiane and the ancient northern capital of Luang Prabang; the itinerary can easily be added onto other touring in Southeast Asia for those who are interested in a short stopover in Laos.
Begin with three nights in Luang Prabang: this magnificent World Heritage Site boasts countless mosaic-covered temples sprinkled along the banks of the Mekong River, and the quiet charm of the town makes it most visitors’ favorite. Rise early to observe the monks in their morning meal procession; you can participate by buying rice in a traditional basket and helping distribute it to the line of patient monks. That same day, head to the Pak Ou caves, where Buddha images have been carefully hidden in the limestone cliffs. On another day, take an excursion to Khouangsi Falls, where you have the chance to swim in the turquoise pools or walk along forest paths
From Luang Prabang, fly to the capital city of Vientiane for one night. The capital city of Vientiane has wide boulevards, which are almost devoid of traffic, and with its many temples, the city retains the feel of another age. You will visit Wat Sisaket with its thousands of miniature Buddha statues, followed by trips to Wat Ho Prakeo the former home of the Emerald Buddha statue and That Luang Stupa, the single most important monument in Laos. You will discover the best highlights of Laos in 5 days.
